March of the Mitten Men
John Philip Sousa wrote the March of the Mitten Men in 1923, dedicating it to "Thomas Mitten and the men of the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company." The first melody of the trio is a lyric, 64 count somewhat syncopated tune, no part of which repeats itself. The second melody is the "Onward Christian Soldier " theme, played softly by the brasses. The "finale" masterfully combines the first theme in the full ensemble, with the hymn theme in the trombones. This is not a "typical" - sounding Sousa march.
